Open Door Appreciation Slated Sunday
The organization will host the East Texas Open Door Community Appreciation 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Marshall Visual Art Center.
"It's our chance to say thank you," said Donna Majors, recreational director for the non-profit organization. "People in the community have helped us with recreational activities and donations of things the girls might need. It might be the librarian helping, when they go to the library, with homework because they might need someone to help them with that. Or someone, like the people at Samsung, who gave us new appliances, washers and dryers, big screen televisions. So many people in the community have found ways to help meet our needs."
"I would also like to open it up to people who are interested in our program to come and see what it is about and join us," said board member Angela Person.
East Texas Open Doors has been in existence for more than 20 years to aid children who have been the victims of abuse or neglect. Opened in 1987, it started as an emergency shelter for runaways and children in need of temporary shelter, according to Ms. Person. In 1994, a Residential Treatment Center, which can house up to 28 girls, was added to meet the demand for a home for girls who had been in and out of foster care or other placements.
