Bettman Agrees With Mccain, Not Stars Coach
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman praised the progress of the Coyotes this season, much as Sen. John McCain did Sunday when I asked him a similar question during his visit to Phoenix International Raceway.
“I think the progress on the ice has been terrific,” Bettman said before Monday’s game at Jobing.com Arena. “The team is playing extremely competitive hockey. It’s early in the season but clearly in the playoff hunt.
“I like the fact that John McCain is keeping an eye on this team. He’s always been a big sports fan. The first time I met him was at a hockey game.”
Also asked Bettman to respond as an “owner” to the criticism of the arena ice by Dallas Stars coach Marc Crawford. He said he'd answer the accusations of “god-awful” ice that Crawford equated to playing at Lambeau Field in Green Bay as the commissioner.
“We try to have the best ice we can every night in every building,” he said. “There are 1,230 regular-season games in 30 different arenas, all of which are multi-use facilities. And depending on what was last in the arena or what the weather happened to be outside, or a variety of circumstances we can’t always control, there isn’t an arena in the league that probably on any given night in the course of the season doesn’t have ice that’s not quite as good as we’d like.”
